Mother

by Joanna C. Valente

Who was your first love?
My only dream is a bodiless hand
stroking a child, canyon for a face

Have you seen the dead?

We are a carriage of hummingbirds

When did you become a mother?
On the Q, a boy took a feather out
of his mother’s coat, put it in the palm
of her hand

When did you stop believing in God?
Make 12 an hour, chalk it up
to life experience
