The River

Shatter
the white
winter crust

glide down
the valley
of watchful stars

again, pushing
the prodigal spring
till it saunters

in, scattering
with both hands
rainbow hues

of asters, geraniums
and the gold of corn
that rears

its proud head
and wipes away
the dark hours

of grim
waiting
and veers

us towards
seasons of sun,
lifting our hearts.

River, river
be a prayer
of surging hope,

a benediction
for the piteous
race of man.
